Preview: Yankees vs Rays (7/2/14)

LOU

It’s up to Vidal Nuno (2-4, 5.42 ERA) to avoid the sweep at the hands of Jake Odorizzi (3-7, 4.14 ERA) and the Rays. Nuno will look to improve off his last start. He threw 5 2/3 innings of scoreless two hit ball in a win against the rival Red Sox. It was his first career win at Yankee Stadium.

Odorizzi lasted five innings in a loss to the Orioles on Friday. He still struck out six batters, but he also walked four and went over 100 pitches. He took a no decision. “There’s gonna be times when one pitch isn’t working for you, two pitches, and you have to deal with what you have,” Odorizzi said. “To be able to work around that type of thing just kind of helps in your development and your growing as a player.” Odorizzi’s only start against the Yankees was last April. He went just four innings while giving up three earned runs.

Tuesday night, Derek Jeter tied Lou Gehrig for first place on the Yankees all time doubles list with 534. Wednesday, the Yankees will commemorate the 75th anniversary of Lou Gehrig’s “Luckiest Man” speech, which he gave on July 4, 1939. It will kick off MLB’s league wide effort to spread awareness and raise funds for ALS research. “The Yankees have to be leaders in this project,” said Debbie Tymon, the Yankees’ senior vice president of marketing. “It’s Lou Gehrig’s disease, so we really need to kick this off. We really need to lead the awareness, lead the fight and impact the fundraising, because it’s part of our history.”

Notes on the game

Nuno is starting against the Rays for the fourth time. He hasn’t played any other team more than twice.

The Yankees have the leagues best record when holding opponents to four runs or less and in games decided by two or fewer runs. They have lost two straight to the Rays despite doing both of these.

The Yankees have lost four straight games and eight of their last 10.
