Preview – Yankees vs Red Sox (4/12/15)

Masahiro Tanaka (0-1, 9.00 ERA) tries to get back some dignity for the team as he faces off against Clay Buchholz (1-0, 0.00 ERA). Tanaka threw 82 pitches in four innings on Opening Day. He threw 27 fastballs and relied on his offspeed pitches against Toronto, raising questions about his health. Last season against Boston he went 1-2 with a 4.50 ERA.

Tanaka should be a little extra motivated since there has been speculation about his decreased velocity and his health. Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez said recently that he believes Tanaka is pitching at “65 percent” health.

Buchholz had an impressive Opening Day performance, racking up nine strikeouts and allowing just three hits over seven innings against Philly. He has earned a decision in all seven starts in the Bronx going 4-3 with a 4.05 ERA. On the road in his career he has posted a 37-23 record and a 3.82 ERA.
