Preview: Yankees vs Red Sox (9/2/14)

Shane Greene (4-1, 3.09 ERA) is coming off a two run victory against Detroit. He has been a strong addition to a Yankees rotation that has been decimated by injuries. Joe Kelly (0-1, 3.86 ERA) is scheduled to start for Boston.

Kelly had some slight inflammation in his shoulder his last time out against Toronto, he was pulled from the game as a precautionary measure.  “In light of five days ago, we were going to hold him shorter than normal,” John Farrell said after Kelly’s last start. “No concern from on health standpoint, but from volume standpoint we didn’t want to get past 85-90 pitches. He felt fine in his side session but more precautionary, we weren’t going to extend him tonight.”

Jacoby Ellsbury could be back in the Yankees’ lineup against his former team after missing the last two games due to a sore left ankle. He did some light running and took batting practice before Sunday’s game and he pinch hit in the ninth “He wants to play, he’s a competitor,” Joe Girardi said before Sunday’s game. “All these guys want to play when they are beat up. That’s the way you want players to be. But sometimes you have to help make decisions for them.” Ellsbury has been the Yankees’ most consistent hitter throughout the season and was their hottest hitter during August, hitting .324 with five homers.
