Preview: Yankees vs Red Sox (9/4/14)

The rubber match and last time the Sox visit the Bronx this season will be Chris Capuano (1-2, 4.01 ERA) taking on his former team and Brandon Workman (1-8, 4.93 ERA). CapuanoĀ earned his first win in pinstripes throwing 6 1/3 innings of three run ball against Toronto his last time out. HeĀ snapped a 12 start winless streak throwing his second consecutive quality start.

Workman will make his first start in theĀ Majors sinceĀ being optioned to Triple-A on August 24th. He was shelled forĀ 10 hits and seven runs over just 3 2/3 innings against the Mariners in his last start for Boston.Ā “All I can do is keep working,” said Workman. “I feel like I’m in a good place. Hopefully I’ll go out and throw the ball well tomorrow and break that streak and get out of the slump, or whatever you want to call it.”

Martin Prado has been diagnosed with a mild left hamstring strain and will sit out this game after sitting out Wednesdays. He had been one of the Yankees best offensive players recently, hitting .381 over his last 16 games. “He’s been swinging really well,” Joe Girardi said. “It’s not what you want. Hopefully it’s just a day or two here and we can get him back, but we’ll just have to wait and see.”

Notes on the game

Workman allowed four runs on seven hits and lost his only career start against the Yankees on June 27th.

Fifteen of the Yankees’ final 25 games are at home. All of them being games in the division with the exception of three against Kansas City.
