It is difficult to decide which performance was more impressive in the Yankees’ seventh straight win today, a 5-2 victory over the Mets: Eduardo Nunez following a 4-for-4 performance on Friday with 3 more hits today, including two doubles and a home run, or Bartolo Colon returning from the DL with yet another dominating performance.
Let’s start with Colon, who threw 80 pitches through six innings while lowering his ERA to 2.88. Bartolo only “struggled” through one inning, the fifth, when he gave up an infield single and a bloop single which set up a bases loaded situation with the Mets’ pitcher Dillon Gee batting. Terry Collins decided to let Gee swing-away, who grounded into a big double play to get Colon and the Yankees out of a jam. From there the Yankees scored four runs in the top of the sixth; the rally started by Curtis Granderson’ first home run since June 14.
Eduardo Nunez was again the star offensively, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and a home run. Nunez was robbed of another hit in the fifth inning by the Mets’ Justin Turner. Nunez’ current run of 7-for-8 only magnifies the question: how do the Yankees get Nunez playing time with Jeter returning from the DL on July 4?
