Spring Training Game 5: Errors costly in Yankees loss

Baltimore Orioles 10 — New York Yankees 7

Five errors prove costly in today’s 10-7 loss to the Baltimore Orioles.

Brett Gardner continues to hit the baseball all over the field with a bases-loaded triple, bringing 3 runs in a 4-run 2nd inning. He is currently hitting .625 (5 for 8) in 3 games this Spring. The Yankees offense couldn’t make much of an impact the rest of the game until the 9th inning when the Orioles bullpen couldn’t close the game. Three singles and three walks put the game within reaching distance but the struggles of the Orioles bullpen survived thanks to sloppy defense by the Yankees.

Nik Turley had a poor start to today’s game and he didn’t help himself defensively. After a leadoff walk, the 23-year old lefty would commit an error on a poor pickoff throw. Two singles and a double would follow, giving up two runs. The next error would be from the usually reliable infielder Jayson Nix on a throw to 1st that would allow two more runs to score. Two wild pitches would bring in the next run off of Turley. His long day would end after one out when he got a strikeout. When the starting pitcher cannot finish even the first inning, it’s generally a bad sign of things to come. Another error in the 7th inning would produce one of three runs in the inning. Four of the 10 runs given up in today’s game would go unearned.
