Torres, Yankees walk-off Astros

NEW YORK — Another game, another accomplishment for Gleyber Torres. The reigning American League Player of the Week continued a stellar rookie season, clubbing the second walk-off hit of his young Major League career to lead the New York Yankees to a 6-5 comeback win over the Houston Astros.

To get it to that point, however, the Bombers had a magical ninth inning, that saw them tie the game at five against reliever Chris Devenski.

With Miguel Andujar on-base, Brett Gardner smashed his second home run of the night to the delight of a raucous New York crowd. The Yankee left fielder had four hits on Tuesday, as he continues his resurgence at the top of the order.

It wasn’t all good, though, for Aaron Boone‘s squad. For the fourth straight start, CC Sabathia did not have his best stuff, lasting just five innings and giving up five runs (three earned).

Luckily for the Yankees, Charlie Morton, who dominated the team in Houston, was not at his best, as well. While he did give up three runs, Morton did strikeout ten Yankees on the night.

To open the scoring, Gardner greeted the Houston starter with a leadoff homer to the seats in right center field.

The Astros would immediately get the run back, though, when Evan Gattis completely demolished a Sabathia cutter to the area near the bullpen in left field.

While the Yankees would take the lead back in the bottom half of the second, Houston would score three unanswered runs to increase its lead to 5-2.

Aaron Judge would bring New York a little closer with his fifteenth homer of the season in the fifth inning, against Morton.

The Yankees would not score again till the ninth.

After tying the game, it looked as if Houston was going to retake the lead in the tenth. After drawing a two-out walk against Aroldis Chapman, Tony Kemp moved to second on a wild pitch.

Though Chapman would throw another one, a fortuitous bounce allowed Gary Sanchez to gun out Kemp at third, with a perfect throw to Andujar.

That then opened the door for Torres’s heroic in the ninth. Andujar hit a two-out double off of Brad Peacock then Torres drove him in with a single.

Lost in this win is the great pitching Boone got from his relievers. Jonathan Holder pitched two scoreless frames, while David Robertson, Dellin Betances, and Chapman each pitched a clean inning to allow the offense to come back.

The Yankees go for the series win tomorrow, with Luis Severino facing off with Dallas Keuchel.

Current Yankees Record: 34-17
