Yankee Game 26: Late inning loss overshadows Whitley’s performance

Toronto Blue Jays 3 โ€” New York Yankees 1

So far this season, when the Yankees enter the eighth inning, the feeling from both teams and the crowd is that the game is over. With Andrew Miller and Dellin Betances at the back end of the bullpen, the Yankees shorten games. However, with Miller unavailable for tonight’s game, Joe Girardi went to Chris Martin to start the eighth after Chase Whitley (no decision) had one of the best games of his career and the season for New York.

Whitley gave up six hits and struck out six in seven scoreless innings. But it was Girardi’s decision to not send Whitley out for the eighth (he had only thrown 90 pitches) that left some people scratching their heads. After retiring Devon Travis, Martin surrendered two straight hits set up a first and second for Toronto. Girardi then made the switch to Betances. Then, the Yankees ran into a bit of tough luck. Edwin Encarnacion hit a bloop double that scored Josh Donaldson to tie the game. After Betances got Kevin Pillar to pop up to second, Russell Martin hit a rocket down the third base line. Chase Headley made a diving stop and throw but Garrett Jones was unable to handle the throw and the both Blue Jay runners scored to give them a 3-1 lead. ย

The Yankees went down 1-2-3 in the ninth to lose the first of three games in Toronto.

New York managed only three hits in eight innings against knuckleballer R.A. Dickey. In the seventh, Carlos Beltran led off with a double. He was then moved over on a grounder by Stephen Drew. After a Headley walk, Jones grounded out to score Beltran but that was all the Yankees could put together.

Jacoby Ellsbury extended his hit streak to seven games with a sixth inning double. It was his third double of the season. His average sits at .347 on the year. Headley had the Yankees first hit in the second inning.

Win – R.A. Dickey (1-3)

Loss – Chris Martin (0-1)

Save – Brett Cecil (2)
