BRONX, N.Y. – The New York Yankees installed new seating in right field prior to Tuesday night’s game known as ‘The Judge’s Chambers’ in honor of phenom Aaron Judge. Despite a stellar performance from rookie Jordan Montgomery, the Yankees fell to the Kansas City Royals, 6-2.
Jordan Montgomery had his best start of the season against the Kansas City Royals in a near perfect effort. The rookie lefty threw 6.2 innings and allowed only one earned run – a home run by Lorenzo Cain – on two hits. Montgomery also struck out six batters over the course of his outing.
The Yankees struck first with home runs by Aaron Hicks and Chris Carter, making the lead 2-0 early. Following Cain’s home run, the Royals trailed by one run in the bottom of the seventh when things went awry for the Bronx Bombers.
Adam Warren, who has been great for most of the season for the Yankees, blew the 2-1 lead when he allowed a two-run blast to Jorge Bonifacio. In Warren’s last three outings, he has allowed five earned runs and five hits in 1.2 innings of work.
The Royals did not relinquish their lead once they grabbed a hold of it. Mike Moustakas and Whit Merrifield tacked on to the scoring by providing home runs of their own. Between Adam Warren, Jonathan Holder and Chasen Shreve the Yankees bullpen combined to allow five earned runs only 1.1 innings.
The Yankees are now 26-17 on the season but remain a game and a half above the second place Baltimore Orioles in their division. The Minnesota Twins’ Ervin Santana prevented the Yankees from losing any ground on their division foe by blanking the O’s in a complete game shutout.
Luis Severino will look to get the Yankees back on track when he takes on Jason Hammel on Wednesday night.
