Yankees Game 10: Home runs hurt Hughes again

Solo home runs got to Hughes in today’s loss.

Baltimore Orioles 5 — New York Yankees 3

A familiar flaw in Phil Hughes’ game came back in today’s 5-3 loss to the Baltimore Orioles.

In 2012, Phil Hughes had 32 starts and gave up 35 home runs. In this season, Hughes didn’t give up any home runs in his first start but didn’t fair as well in his second. In three innings today, Hughes gave up five runs on nine hits without recording a strikeout. For those with a glass-half-full, the home runs were all without a runner on base. Ryan Flaherty, Nick Markakis, and Nolan Reimold all took Hughes deep. He would exit with a runner on second after a double and would hear a chorus of boos from the crowd.

David Phelps would take over and be the beginning of a shut down relieving effort. With a ground out and a pair of strikeouts, Phelps managed to end the Orioles rally. In four innings, David Phelps would allow one hit while striking out six, allowing no runs. The lone hit would be thrown out at second base when Adam Jones attempted to extend his single to a double. Joba Chamberlain had a scoreless inning of work. David Robertson would pitch the ninth inning with an interesting defense. With the pinch-hitter, Brennan Boesch, striking out for shortstop Jayson Nix, Robinson Cano would take over second base and catcher Francisco Cervelli would move over to second base for the first time this season. To the relief of all, likely including Cervelli, two flyouts and a strikeout would go smoothly.

In the second inning, Travis Hafner hit his third home run of the season. With two outs, a throwing error by J.J. Hardy extended the inning and Lyle Overbay took advantage of it with a base hit to score the second run of the game. Vernon Wells would bring them within two with a solo home run in the sixth inning, his third of the season, but that was as close as the Yankees could get.

Kevin Youkilis’ nine-game hitting streak would come to an end. Lyle Overbay has six hits in his last 13 at-bats. The bullpen went six scoreless innings with two hits and seven strikeouts.
