Yankees game 10 preview (4/16/16)

After a loss on Jackie Robinson Day, CC Sabathia (1-0, 4.50 ERA) looks to right the ship against Felix Hernandez (0-1, 0.69 ERA) in game two at the stadium. CC came out swinging in 2016, or in his case came out throwing. He gave up 3 runs on 4 hits through 6 innings in his season debut against a tough Tigers lineup and came away with the W. The big man holds a 2.61 ERA in 162 innings against the Mariners in his career, his best against any AL opponent. His 8.4 strikeouts per nine innings against Seattle is the best against any team he’s thrown 100 or more innings against.

Despite allowing just 3 runs on 4 hits over 13 innings to start 2016, King Felix is still seeking his first win of the year. In 19 career start against the Yanks, he is 9-6 with 3.18 ERA but 5-1 with a 1.38 ERA at the new Yankee Stadium.

Both pitchers are former Cy Young Award winners and both are coming up on milestones. Hernandez needs five strikeouts to pass Randy Johnson’s record of 2,162 in a Mariners uniform. Sabathia will be making his 200th start for the Yankees, making him the 10th pitcher since 1900 to make at least 200 starts for more than one team.

Tidbits:

CC ranks second among active pitchers in wins with 215. Hernandez is sixth on that list with 143.

With this start, CC becomes the 17th Yankees pitcher to reach 200 starts.

This will be CC and Hernandez’s third time facing off with neither of them earning a decision the first two times.
