Yankees Game 100: Granderson’s Miscue Costly

Boston Red Sox 8 — New York Yankees 6

Pedro Ciriaco’s run-scoring triple was enough as the Yankees lost by a score of 8-6 to the Boston Red Sox.

Two innings of CC Sabathia’s six innings of work were bad. In this 2:04 rain delayed game, Sabathia came out with poor command as many of his pitches stayed over the plate. Two doubles in the 1st inning by Adrian Gonzalez and rookie Will Middlebrooks brought in 3 runs to put the Yankees in an early hole. Then in the 5th inning, Adrian Gonzalez struck again as he delivered a three-run home run to right field. Over the 6 innings, Sabathia threw 104 pitches to get 6 strikeouts and walk 2. David Phelps would relieve Sabathia for 2 strong, scoreless innings with just 1 hit and 3 strikeouts. With the game tied at 6 in the 9th, the save opportunity no longer existed so Rafael Soriano took over. After getting the first out, a walk of Jacoby Ellsbury would be the beginning to the end as Pedro Ciriaco followed up with a triple after Curtis Granderson was twisted and turned as the lead run scored and Ciriaco would be brought in later to give the Red Sox the two-run lead they needed to win.

The Yankees offense got started from an unexpected source as catcher Chris Stewart got the first hit for the Yankees with a home run to left field in the 3rd inning. The next run came from another unexpected source as Jayson Nix hit a two-run home run in the 5th as a part of a three-run inning. Then in the 8th inning, Vicente Padilla pitched with a two-run lead and with the tying-run at the plate, struck out Derek Jeter first and Curtis Granderson after two near game-tying home runs. Then the notable matchup of Vicente Padilla and Mark Teixeira took place and on a 2-1 fastball, Teixeira hit a game-tying two-run home run that appeared to reflect a lot of his frustrations with his former teammate. The Yankees could not rally in the bottom of the 9th to continue this long game.
