Texas Rangers 1 — New York Yankees 2 (5 innings)

The Yankees game lasts just five innings in victory after heavy winds and heavy rain.

The New York Yankees had a tough task ahead of them, going against Rangers ace Yu Darvish. After a scoreless first that featured two strikeouts, the Yankees would get their first hit from newcomer and hero of last night, Chase Headley, who hit a double to right center field but would be stranded.

In the third inning, Yankees starter David Phelps had faced the minimum but started with a pair of singles, including one on a perfectly executed hit-and-run play with Leonys Martin and Chris Gimenez. With runners on the corners and no outs, David Phelps would generate a double play that allowed the first run of the game to score. A strikeout of Shin-Soo Choo kept the scoring to just one.

The Yankees offense would respond well against Darvish in the bottom half of the third inning.

Francisco Cervelli hit a double down the left field line to start the inning. Brendan Ryan would productively ground out to the right side to put Cervelli on third with just one out. Pitcher and catcher would not be on the same page as Darvish committed a balk and the tying run scored. With Brett Gardner still at the plate and in a hitter’s count, the Yankees left fielder would make it double digit long balls with his 10th home run of the season to right field. The Yankee Stadium treat would put the Yankees ahead by a score of 2-1.

In the fifth inning, with rain in the forecast, Leonys Martin would hit a triple with one out. The potential tying run was standing on third base but Chris Gimenez would pop out to Cervelli behind the plate for the second out. Phelps would get Rougned Odor to chase an inside pitch and the strikeout kept the Yankees ahead.

Rain would soon fall with one on and one out in the bottom half of the fifth inning creating a rain delay.

A second delay would occur as the problems getting the tarp on the field would make the infield conditions poor enough that the game would be called.

In five innings, David Phelps allowed one run on five hits while walking none and striking out three.

Win – David Phelps (5-4)

Loss – Yu Darvish (9-6)
