Yankees game 101: McCarthy throws another gem in pinstripes

Cervelli

Texas Rangers 2 — New York Yankees 4

The New York Yankees are able to call on newcomers to be key in completing a series win at home.

In a Thursday matinee, the Yankees called on Brandon McCarthy to go for the four-game series win over the Texas Rangers. Since joining the Yankees, McCarthy has put up a 1.42 ERA with two earned runs over 12.2 innings in two starts. He looked to continue his strong start with his new team.

Through the first two innings, McCarthy struck out four and was perfect. The first base runner would come in the third inning with a leadoff walk but he got a double play to shortstop Brendan Ryan for two outs on the next batter. Second baseman Rougned Odor kept the inning alive with a single that turned the lineup over. Shin-Soo Choo would follow with a single. Elvis Andrus would hit a bloop single over the head of Brian Roberts,  scoring Odor and giving the Rangers the early lead.

An aggressive approach against Rangers starter Colby Lewis did not pay off through the first three innings, Brendan Ryan being the only batter to reach when he was hit by a pitch. In the fourth inning, the Yankees got their first hit in a bloop to shallow left field, just inside the left field line. The ball would hit the problematic tarp and Brett Gardner would get into second with an easy double. Carlos Beltran and Brian McCann would unproductively ground out and fly out, leaving the runner in scoring position for newcomer Chase Headley. The former Padre third baseman would hit a laser off the right field wall for a run-scoring single to tie the game at one.

The leadoff walk would haunt Colby Lewis as he started the fifth inning with a walk to Ichiro Suzuki. Francisco Cervelli hit a double down the left field line, extending his hitting streak to six games and the go-ahead run scored from first. Brendan Ryan would sacrifice Cervelli over to third base and Jacoby Ellsbury would walk to put runners on the corners. Brett Gardner would hit the productive sacrifice fly to left field to score the third run of the game.

Brandon McCarthy would retire 10 of the last 12 batters he faced. In six innings, McCarthy allowed one run on four hits while walking two and striking out five. He would hand the game over to the bullpen with a two-run lead.

The first reliever of the bullpen would be Adam Warren. The first batter he faced was J.P. Arencibia. The Rangers’ designated hitter would hit a home run just into the left field seats to make it a one-run game. Warren would bounce back with a pair of fly outs and Matt Thornton got a one-pitch out to finish off the seventh inning.

Dellin Betances would have a perfect eighth inning. Carlos Beltran hit a single and Brian McCann followed with a double to the left-center gap, scoring an insurance run for the Yankees and David Robertson.

David Robertson would start the inning with a fly out but he walked Jim Adduci to put the potential tying run at the plate. Robertson would bounce back with a pair of strikeouts to Arencibia and Leonys Martin to end the game and keep the Yankees hot streak going since the break.
