Yankees game 102: Teixeira muscles up in victory

New York Yankees 13 – Chicago White Sox 6

In the first inning against the Chicago White Sox and their starting pitcher Carlos Rodon, Jacoby Ellsbury and Chris Young were set down but the Yankees did not go down in order. Alex Rodriguez kept the inning alive with a double to left center. Mark Teixeira walked and Carlos Beltran ripped a double to left field to score the first run of the game.

Nathan Eovaldi walked the first batter of the game but retired the side to send the Yankees bats out there to give him a more sizable lead.

John Ryan Murphy started the second inning with a single and Brendan Ryan followed with a single of his own. Didi Gregorius sacrificed them over with a bunt and Jacoby Ellsbury flew out to shallow center field, not deep enough to score a run but the Yankees kept the momentum going. Chris Young walked to load the bases and Alex Rodriguez hit a single to score a run and the bases remain loaded. Mark Teixeira unloaded the bases with a grand slam that carried its way to center field.

The Yankees got two more on base following the home run but settled for a five-run second inning to give them an early 6-0 lead.

The White Sox managed to get on the scoreboard in the third inning when Jose Abreu hit a two-out, two-run home run to right field but the Yankees had a response in the fourth inning.

Chris Young hit a double by center fielder Adam Eaton to start the inning. Carlos Rodon lost control of a pair of pitches, allowing Young to advance and eventually score. Alex Rodriguez walked to end Rodon’s night on the mound. Matt Albers came in for relief to turn Mark Teixeira to the left side. Teixeira had his power stroke going again when he took Albers deep for a two-run home run. For Teixeira, this was his 14th game with home runs from both sides of the plate, the most all-time. This was also his 41st multi-home run game, second most by a switch-hitter. Have yourself a night, Mark.

The offense kept going after Teixeira crushed his second home run of the night when Carlos Beltran and Chase Headly got on base with a pair of singles. John Ryan Murphy loaded the bases with a walk and the bottom of the order continued their great hitting. Brendan Ryan hit a single to left, scoring a run and Didi Gregorius hit a sacrifice fly to score another run. By the time the inning ended, the Yankees were ahead 11-2.

The White Sox scored another run in the fifth inning but the lead was too big for single runs to impact the result.

In 5 2/3 innings, Nathan Eovaldi allowed three runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out five. He needed 117 pitches to get through his start tonight. Eovaldi will need to be more efficient and find ways to get batters out quicker without surrendering so many foul balls.

Chase Headley brought in a run in the fifth inning and Jacoby Ellsbury snapped his 0-for with a run-scoring single in the sixth inning, giving the Yankees a 13-3 lead.

Adam Warren stayed in for the seventh inning after getting the last out in the sixth inning. Warren gave up a lead off single to Tyler Saladino and he came around to score on a triple by J.B. Shuck. He came around to score on a wild pitch.

In the ninth inning, position player Adam LaRoche took the mound and did what only one White Sox pitcher did in one inning, retire the side in order. LaRoche also struck out Brendan Ryan to the amusement of both batter and pitcher.

Nick Goody allowed a run in the ninth inning but was able to get the final three outs in a great offensive night for the Yankees.

Win – Nathan Eovaldi (11-2)

Loss – Carlos Rodon (4-4)
