Yankees Game 104: Cano’s Slam Highlights Win

Baltimore Orioles 3 — New York Yankees 12

Yankees offense came out strong in today’s 12-3 win over the Baltimore Orioles.

Phil Hughes received run support similar to the offense that Ivan Nova received but Hughes was able to hold the lead. In his 6 innings of work, the only run came on a ground out in the 2nd inning by Endy Chavez. He was able to scatter 9 hits over his outing over 107 pitches with 2 walks and 2 strikeouts en route to his 11th win of the season. Defensively, Ichiro Suzuki manned left field for the first time as a Yankee and in the 6th inning he made it appear like it was not a problem at all when he robbed Mark Reynolds of extra base hits with a leaping catch at the wall. Today, in the 7th inning, Joba Chamberlain retured to the mound for the first time since June of 2011. In his 1.2 innings of work, Chamberlain surrendered a home run to J.J. Hardy on his second pitch of the day. He would ultimately give up 2 runs on 4 hits with a walk. He threw 28 pitches and 16 of them were for strikes as it was a great sight to see Joba Chamberlain return to the majors.

The Yankees offense made quick work of Orioles starter Zach Britton as he lasted just 2.2 innings. On his 4th pitch to open the game, Curtis Granderson took Britton deep for his 29th home run of the season. Two more hits and a sacrifice fly by Andruw Jones brought in the 2nd run of the game. After 2 more runs came in in the 2nd inning, the 3rd inning was where the Yankees blew the game wide open. A ground-rule double by Jayson Nix brought in one run, a single to shallow center brought in two runs, and a grand slam by Robinson Cano capped off a seven-run 3rd inning. A sacrifice fly with the bases loaded in the 8th inning was the only run newly acquired Casey McGehee brought in on his hitless debut at 1st base with two walks and scoring twice.
