Yankees game 104: Didi and Drew lead the charge in road trip finale

New York Yankees 13 – Chicago White Sox 3

The Yankees got the game started in the best way when the first batter, Jacoby Ellsbury took Jeff Samardzija deep to left center for a solo home run. Samardzija followed this by hitting Brett Gardner but it was not done with bad intentions, just bad control.

Ivan Nova allowed a deep single to Jose Abreu, who limped his way to first base after fouling a ball off his shin. He also allowed a single in the second and third inning but stranded them as well. The Yankees provided more run support in the fourth inning.

After the first out, Brian McCann got on base with a single. Carlos Beltran hit a single and Chase Headley walked to load the bases for one of the hottest bats of this road trip, Didi Gregorius. The Yankees shortstop came through with a single to left field, scoring two runs. Stephen Drew loaded the bases with a single and Jacoby Ellsbury brought home another run with a sacrifice fly to left field. Brett Gardner brought home two more to make it a five-run inning, extending the lead to six.

In the fifth inning, Mark Teixeira continues his great season, hitting a solo home run to right field. Two outs later, Chase Headley took a pitch off the foot and Didi Gregorius walked to start a two-out rally. Stephen Drew smacked a line drive double to left center, scoring two runs and extending the Yankees lead to 9-0.

The White Sox spoiled Nova’s bid for a shutout in the sixth inning. Adam Eaton walked to start the sixth inning and with two outs, Melky Cabrera stuck it to his former team again, hitting a run-scoring single.

In six innings, Ivan Nova allowed one run on five hits while walking two and striking out seven. A very strong outing by Nova where he showed sharp fastballs, sinkers and breaking balls.

In the seventh inning, Chase Headley started with a double. Didi Gregorius reached on an error by the second baseman and Stephen Drew hit a line drive to the right field corner and raced his way to a two-run triple, making it four runs batted in today. In fact, Stephen Drew was a home run short of the cycle.

In the bottom half of the inning, Chasen Shreve took over and got the first out but he did have a difficult time with the long ball. Alexei Ramirez and Geovany Soto took Shreve deep to add on a pair of runs in a rare bad inning by Shreve. Branden Pinder picked up Shreve and got the last out in the seventh inning and finished off the eighth inning too.

Stephen Drew made a bid for the cycle and to elevate his batting average to .200 but struck out in his last at-bat. Fear not Yankees fans, his average is at .199 though. Andrew Miller did not see much work in this road trip so he came in and had a five-pitch ninth inning, finishing off the game and finishing off a successful road trip.

Win – Ivan Nova (4-3)

Loss – Jeff Samardzija (8-6)
