Yankees game 105: One bad inning too much for Phelps

Phelps

New York Yankees 2 — Toronto Blue Jays 4

The Yankees offense could not find the big hit behind David Phelps.

The New York Yankees had a formidable task in front of them as they opened their series against the Texas Rangers with ace Yu Darvish on the mound. Through the first two innings, the Yankees managed just two hits but a thorn in the side of Darvish would torment the tall righty.

Entering tonight’s game, Brett Gardner had just two hits against Darvish but they were both home runs. After tonight’s game, Gardner would join a select group of players who have four home runs against the impressive pitcher. In the third inning, Brett Gardner would hit his 11th home run of the season with a long drive to right center field. Gardner would get his fourth home run against Darvish in the fifth inning, a deep fly ball to center field.

Unfortunately, most of the Yankees offense would not show up around the home run-hitting Gardner.

With a two-run lead, Chris Gimenez hit a leadoff single off of David Phelps to start the fifth inning. He would get the next two outs but the third one would be a problem. With a runner on second, Elvis Andrus would hit a single to left field and the Rangers were on the board. Alex Rios would hit a single to put runners on the corners and Adrian Beltre would hit a double down the left field line that scored the game-tying run. After a walk of Jim Adduci, J.P. Arencibia would put the Rangers ahead with a two-run single to center field.

With two outs in the fifth inning, David Phelps gave up four hits and four runs before getting the last out. In six innings, David Phelps allowed the four runs on eight hits while walking one and striking out three.

Derek Jeter had a great game at the plate. Derek Jeter would hit a single in the first inning and a ground-rule double in the third inning. This hit was significant as it put him in a tie for eighth place with Carl Yastrzemski on the all-time hits list. The tie would not last long as Jeter would get his third hit of the game, surpassing Yaz with his 3,420th career hit and solely possessing seventh place.

Francisco Cervelli extended his hitting streak to 10 with a single in the fourth inning. Another significant hit came in the seventh inning. In his first game action since July 20, Mark Teixeira pinch-hit for Brian Roberts and hit a single to left field before being pinch-run for. The use of Teixeira in tonight’s game should be a clear indication that he will play tomorrow, a much-needed presence in the field and at the plate.
