Yankees Game 106: Tanaka roughed up as deGrom silences bats

New York Yankees 1 – New York Mets 7

After taking the first in the road half of Subway Series, the Yankees looked to take Queens with a sweep.

In the first inning, the Yankees came up empty against Jacob deGrom despite a two-out rally as two got on base but a strikeout of Mark Teixeira stranded them. Masahiro Tanaka retired the first eight in a row before deGrom reached with a single. Alejandro De Aza made the most of the two-out rally in the third inning when he hit a two-run home run to right field.

Tanaka was burned in the fifth inning when Travis d’Arnaud took him deep to left field but the straw that broke the camel’s back ironically came in the top of the seventh inning with the Yankees batting.

Starlin Castro got on base with a leadoff single after deGrom had set down 14 of the last 15 Yankees batters. Chase Headley grounded into a double play and Aaron Hicks flew out to center. This last out proved critical as Tanaka was due up next and since he did not bat, he was allowed to stay in the game for the seventh inning.

In the seventh inning, Tanaka gave up a lead off single to Wilmer Flores, who advanced to second on a throwing error by Brett Gardner. He came around to score on a double by Michael Conforto and Conforto came to score on a one-out single by Matt Reynolds. A second hit of the night by deGrom ended Tanaka’s night on the mound. Against lefty Richard Bleier, pinch-hitter Yoenis Cespedes reached on a run-scoring, infield single. Neil Walker plated the fourth run of the inning on a double as Bleier struggled against the right-handed batters but got the final two outs of a deflating seventh inning.

In 6 1/3 innings, Masahiro Tanaka allowed a career-high seven runs on eight hits with no walks and four strikeouts.

After seven scoreless innings by deGrom, the Yankees faced Jon Niese and managed to get to him in his second inning of relief. Didi Gregorius led off the ninth inning with a solo home run to prevent the shutout but the defeat came as Castro, Headley and the pinch-hitting Alex Rodriguez were set down to end tonight’s game.
