Yankees game 107: CC pumps up the Yankees to victory

Boston Red Sox 1 – New York Yankees 2

The Yankees pulled out tonight’s win with an unexpected solid start from their starter.

In the first inning, CC Sabathia pitched a quick scoreless first inning. Eduardo Rodriguez got the first two outs before Alex Rodriguez got a hit an Mark Teixeira walked, but Chris Young was retired to end the brief threat.

The game remained scoreless until the third inning.

After a pair of strikeouts, Brett Gardner got on base with a single to center field. Alex Rodriguez ripped a line drive to left field and with two outs, the speedy Gardner was on the move. Hustling his way around the bases, Brett Gardner slid into home ahead of the throw and putting the Yankees ahead by one on the run-scoring double.

After four scoreless innings, CC Sabathia struggled in the fifth inning.

A pair of strikeouts around a single by Ryan Hanigan put one on with two outs. Sabathia walked the nine hitter, Jackie Bradley Jr. on a tough at-bat and Rusney Castillo made the most of their two-out rally with a run-scoring single past the diving Didi Gregorius, tying the game at one. Rattled, CC Sabathia walked Xander Bogaerts on four straight to load the bases for David Ortiz. But Sabathia settled down and delivered his best series of pitches of the night, getting Ortiz to flinch at two sliders and swing over the top of an inside fastball, striking out the power-hitting lefty.

CC Sabathia was pumped.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Yankees looked to be rallying against Rodriguez and the Red Sox. Brendan Ryan and Jacoby Ellsbury led off with a pair of singles. Brett Gardner advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt to put two in scoring position. Alex Rodriguez received an intentional walk to load the bases with one out. In an emotional let down, Mark Teixeira popped out in foul territory and Chris Young popped out as well, ending the inning without plating a run.

CC Sabathia provided a scoreless sixth inning to complete a very strong outing. In six innings, CC Sabathia allowed one run on three hits while walking three and striking out eight.

Tonight was a great start by Sabathia and he clearly felt the emotion of tonight’s game.

Justin Wilson allowed a single in the seventh inning but struck out the side, giving the Yankees a chance to take the lead.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Eduardo Rodriguez got the first out before former Red Sox outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury dealt the eventual game-winning blow to his former team.

The now Yankees center fielder went deep to right field for the go-ahead home run. Dellin Betances allowed a baserunner in the eighth inning but set the Red Sox down with the lead intact.

In the ninth inning, Andrew Miller retired the first two batters before pinch-hitter Travis Shaw got a single to keep their hopes alive. Miller walked Bradley Jr. before striking out Rusney Castillo to end the game and win the series for the Yankees. A good win to build momentum off of with a huge series coming up.
