New York Mets 4 – New York Yankees 1
After taking the first game at home, the Yankees looked to secure the Subway Series win.
Bartolo Colon and Nathan Eovaldi went scoreless in the first inning. The Yankees threatened in the second inning when Brian McCann and Starlin Castro reached with a pair of singles but two ground outs and a fly out stranded them. The game remained scoreless until the fifth inning.
Kelly Johnson led off with a laser of a home run as he lined it just high enough to get into the short porch in right field. Then with one out, Curtis Granderson got on base with a double. On a ground ball back to Eovaldi, the Yankees pitcher tried to catch Granderson off of second base but the aggressive decision was costly, Granderson safely returned to second base and Alejandro De Aza reached on the fielder’s choice. Eovaldi got the second out but Jay Bruce managed to get his first hit since joining the Mets. His first hit went into the Yankees bullpen in right, a three-run home run that extended the Mets lead to four.
In seven innings, Nathan Eovaldi allowed four runs on five hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
The Yankees were kept off the scoreboard until the seventh inning. With one out, Gary Sanchez hit a deep fly ball for a double off the left field wall. After the second out was recorded, Aaron Hicks hit a single through the infield against Jerry Blevins to put the Yankees on the board. Addison Reed pitched a scoreless eighth inning but the ninth inning was eventful for closer Jeurys Familia.
After Familia retired the first out, Didi Gregorius reached on a single and Gary Sanchez beat out an infield single to put the tying run at the plate. Rob Refsnyder hit a sharp ground ball to third where Kelly Johnson turned it into a double play to end the game.
