New York Yankees 2 — Detroit Tigers 7
Justin Verlander dominated while Nova’s struggles continued in tonight’s 7-2 loss to the Detroit Tigers.
A start after giving up a career-high 9 runs, Ivan Nova’s struggles continue. In just 5.1 innings, Nova gave up 7 runs on 11 hits. The Tigers offense started with a bomb to right field by Prince Fielder to lead off the 2nd inning. The other half of their powerful 1-2 punch at the heart of their lineup, Miguel Cabrera, hit an even deeper solo home run to center field in the 4th inning. After the Yankees got to Justin Verlander for a pair of runs to get themselves back in the game, Nova gave up 3 runs in the 5th inning. After getting one out in the 6th, Nova was removed from the game for Joba Chamberlain, who would give up the final run on Nova’s line. Chamberlain and Phelps finished off the remainder of the game. Ivan Nova’s struggles to continue being a tremendous problem as hitters seem to be getting the best of him.
Justin Verlander is always a difficult pitcher to face and when he receives 7 runs of support, he can become more comfortable and it seemed to be the case tonight. In 8 innings, the reigning Cy Young and MVP winner, racked up 14 strikeouts with 2 unearned runs allowed on 8 hits. The 2 unearned runs came in the 5th inning with 2 outs when Verlander could not cover 1st base and was charged with an error to extend the inning. Derek Jeter and Robinson Cano took advantage of the inning continuing as they brought the 2 runs in but could not get any more.
