Yankees Game 109: 9th Inning Rally Falls Short

New York Yankees 5 — Detroit Tigers 6

Rally for 2 runs in the 9th falls short by 1 in tonight’s 6-5 loss to the Detroit Tigers.

Phil Hughes struggles were in his pitch count. A 42-pitch 4th inning gave the Tigers 2 runs, including one by Miguel Cabrera hitting a lead off home run as he continues to have a good handle of the New York Yankees. Cabrera would also be the last batter that Hughes would see as his 102nd pitch of the game was drilled into left field for a two-run double. In Cody Eppley’s 1.2 innings of work, he served up a double to deep right field off the wall for a run by outfielder Andy Dirks. Then in the 8th inning, with the Yankees trailing by 2, Andy Dirks would come through against Joba Chamberlain to put the Tigers ahead by 3 and would prove to be a very important run in tonight’s game.

Unlike Hughes, Rick Porcello was able to put out a quality start. In 6.2 innings, the Yankees got 8 hits but only brought in 3 runs. Eric Chavez was the big offense for the Yankees as he gave them the early two run lead with his two-run home run to left field in the 4th inning. The Yankees began their comeback in the 7th inning when Ichiro Suzuki got his first hit with runners in scoring position since joining the Yankees when he hit a line drive double down the left field line to bring in Nick Swisher, who had 3 hits tonight. Tigers closer Jose Valverde is not known for having the cleanest 9th innings and this was just that. In the 9th inning, Ichiro Suzuki would come through with another achievement as a Yankee as he got another hit with runners in scoring position and the run-scoring single made it his first multi-hit game as a Yankee. Russell Martin would also come through in the 9th with a run-scoring double to left field that was hit a bit too hard for Ichiro Suzuki to score from 1st base. Former Tiger Curtis Granderson’s struggles at the plate continue as he would produce the final out, popping out to 1st base and cutting the comeback short.
