Yankees game 109: Nova serves up the grand long ball in loss

Toronto Blue Jays 6 – New York Yankees 0

The bats were held silent against the Blue Jays acquired ace.

Acquired at the trade deadline, David Price sits on top of the Blue Jays rotation as their ace and lived up to the title in the Bronx. Through the first three innings, two Yankees reached base via the walk but were stranded at first base. Alex Rodriguez snapped the no-hit bid with a single to left field. Mark Teixeira and Brian McCann went down on strikes but Carlos Beltran hit a single to put two on with two outs. Chase Headley flew out to center field to spoil one of the best scoring opportunities for the Yankees.

Meanwhile, Ivan Nova held the Blue Jays quiet through the first five innings but the pitch count elevated.

Nova retired the first batter in the sixth inning before the game fell apart. After a walk to Josh Donaldson, Nova fell behind to Jose Bautista before he hit a single to left field. Ivan Nova walked Edwin Encarnacion on four straight pitches, loading the bases with one out. In a case of one batter too long, Nova was left in to face Justin Smoak. The Blue Jays first baseman made the Yankees pay for decision when he took a 0-1 pitch deep to right field for a grand slam, breaking the scoreless tie.

In 5 1/3 innings, Ivan Nova allowed four runs on four hits while walking two and striking out six.

With a solid four-run lead intact, David Price continued cruising. With two outs in the seventh inning, Price walked Chase Headley before a single by Didi Gregorius put runners on the corners. Brendan Ryan popped out to end the last threat by the Yankees.

In seven scoreless innings, David Price held the Yankees to three hits and three walks but struck out seven.

In relief, Adam Warren struck out the two batters he faced but Bryan Mitchell did not pitch as well over his three innings of relief. In the seventh inning, another Blue Jays acquisition burned the Yankees. Troy Tulowitzki took Bryan Mitchell deep on a fly ball to left field to extend their lead to five. A fielding error in the eighth inning gave the Blue Jays an extra baserunner who came around to score on a Russell Martin single to cap off the six-run win.
