Yankees game 109: Walks key in win

Mark Teixeira

New York Yankees 6 — Boston Red Sox 4

Losing the strike zone proved costly the the Sox starter in today’s Yankees win.

A pair of young pitchers took to the mound today as Shane Greene for the Yankees and Allen Webster for the Red Sox matched up. The first inning started with a walk and an error on third baseman Brock Holt that put Brett Gardner and Derek Jeter on first and second, respectively. The hot start to the inning would be doused by a rare error in judgment by Derek Jeter. On a shallow fly ball to center field, Jeter did not have a good read on whether Jackie Bradley in center field had a good read on it. Bradley would make the catch and turn the double play on Jeter who was far off of first base.

Shane Greene would have a scoreless first inning but strike one was hard to find to start at-bats. He started 11 of the first 12 batters he faced with ball one. New Red Sox left fielder Yoenis Cespedes led off the second inning with a single and Mike Napoli would continue to do damage against the Yankees when he hit a two-run home run. A walk to Daniel Nava would come around to score on a two-out single from catcher Christian Vazquez.

The difficulty with finding the strike zone by Greene would pale in comparison to the mess that Allen Webster found himself in.

After receiving the three-run lead in the bottom of the second inning, Allen Webster would lose the strike zone in the top of the third. Martin Prado, Francisco Cervelli and Brett Gardner would all reach base to start the inning by walk. If a leadoff walk could haunt you, what could three do? It could create a nightmare. Derek Jeter would go the opposite way in vintage Jeter fashion and it went over the first baseman and landed in shallow right field for a two-run double. Jacoby Ellsbury would ground out to bring home the third run of the inning and just like that, the game is tied. After a ground out by Mark Teixeira, Carlos Beltran would hit the second bloop hit of the inning, this time a single to left field to put the Yankees ahead. A walk to Chase Headley and Stephen Drew would reload the bases and it ended Webster’s night early.

In 2.2 innings, Allen Webster allowed four runs on two hits while walking six and striking out one.

After the rough second inning by Greene, the Yankees starter settled down. Eight of the next nine batters he faced would go down, including striking out the side in the fourth inning. He would give up a pair of singles before getting the second out of the inning, but it was his last of the night.

In 4.2 innings, one out away from a win, Shane Greene allowed three runs on six hits while walking two and striking out five. Overall, the pitching line does not look too bad for the 25-year-old Greene but it took him 96 pitches and many of the at-bats started with ball one. Shawn Kelley would finish the inning and pitched a scoreless inning too.

Mark Teixeira would hit his 19th home run of the season to open the fifth inning. Former Red Sox shortstop, Stephen Drew, would hit a one-out double after a Carlos Beltran double in the seventh inning and made it a three-run ball game.

Adam Warren and Dellin Betances would combine for the seventh and eighth inning but the Red Sox fourth run of the game came in to make it a two-run game. David Robertson would give up a single in the ninth inning but shut the door on the win and got his 28th save of the season.

Win – Shawn Kelley (2-3)
