Yankees Game 110: Not enough offense to support Sabathia

Cleveland Indians 5 – New York Yankees 2

After winning in a resounding way yesterday, the Yankees played the Cleveland Indians in the day.

Corey Kluber and CC Sabathia pitched scoreless first innings but the Yankees managed to get to Kluber in the second. With one out, Starlin Castro got on base with a soft single to left field. Then with two outs, Gary Sanchez continued hitting when he hit a fly ball into left center for a run-scoring double.

He advanced to third on a single by Aaron Hicks and scored on a passed ball to put the Yankees ahead by two.

CC Sabathia pitched a scoreless third inning but his former team got to him in the fourth inning. Jason Kipnis got the Indians’ first hit, a solo home run to right field, to cut the Yankees lead in half.

In the fifth inning, Brandon Guyer reached when he was hit by a pitch and tried to advance on a wild pitch but Gary Sanchez gunned him down at second base. Abraham Almonte was walked with two outs and came around to score on a single by Rajai Davis to tie the game.

In the sixth inning, CC Sabathia allowed a solo home run to Mike Napoli, putting the Indians ahead by one. Sabathia allowed two more runners to reach before he could retire the last batter of the inning. Anthony Swarzak got the last out of the inning to wrap up Sabathia’s pitching line.

In 5 2/3 innings, CC Sabathia allowed three runs on six hits with four walks and five strikeouts.

Swarzak did not fair well in the seventh inning when Rajai Davis took him deep to put the Indians ahead by two. The Indians added another run in the ninth inning against Nick Goody.

After eight innings of two-run baseball by Corey Kluber, former Yankee Andrew Miller came on for the save. Miller gave up a lead off single to Brett Gardner but shut down the Yankees from there. Strikeouts of Ellsbury and Teixeira recorded the first two outs and a ground out by McCann ended today’s game with a loss.
