Yankees Game 110: Offense Gets The Win

New York Yankees 12 — Detroit Tigers 8

Shaky defense and questionable decisions get the 12-8 win over the Detroit Tigers.

CC Sabahia pitched into the 7th inning tonight getting 2 outs but was removed at just 94 pitches. In the 6.2 innings of work, the Yankees ace allowed 5 runs but only 3 were earned on 8 hits with 7 strikeouts as he looked to end the Yankees losing ways. Tigers outfielder Brennan Boesch got to Sabathia in the 4th inning for the first run for the Tigers. The final 2 earned runs came on a two-run single by infielder Jeff Baker in the 6th inning. An error by third baseman Casey McGehee would have been the second out for Sabathia but he was forced to face Prince Fielder. The Tigers first baseman hit a ground ball to Mark Teixeira but he couldn’t get the run at home as he was forced to settle with the out at 1st and Sabathia’s night was oddly ended at this point. David Robertson was called upon for the last out of the 7th. Three singles came off of Robertson before he could record the final out making what was once a 7-1 game a 8-7 game. Robertson would also pitch in the 8th and give up a solo home run to put the game 10-8 before Boone Logan would get the final out of the inning. Rafael Soriano was called upon for the 9th inning in a non-save situation and would get a perfect 9th to get what was a messy win.

The Yankees offense proved to be vital in this high-scoring affair. In the 1st inning, Mark Teixeira was hit by a pitch and Eric Chavez continued his hot hitting while Curtis Granderson emerged from his offensive woes as back-to-back singles brought in 2 runs to get the Yankees off to a hot start in tonight’s game. In the 1st inning, Prince Fielder was hit by CC Sabathia and Robinson Cano could have gotten hit by a pitch in the 3rd inning as a response but the main result was that benches were warned following this. The best way to get back at a pitcher for hitting you is to score and Curtis Granderson made payback so sweet when he hit a three-run home run off his former team, his 30th of the season. The Yankees scored 2 more in the 4th inning as it seemed like the Yankees had the game well in control. After a mess of a 6th and 7th inning, more offense would be needed to put the Yankees at a comfortable lead. Mark Teixeira and Eric Chavez would bring in 2 runs in the 8th inning while a balk and a run-scoring single by Robinson Cano put the Yankees comfortably ahead at a late enough time to seal the win and get their first win in the third game of this four-game series.
