Yankees Game 113: Nova Shines in Gem

New York Yankees 5 — Toronto Blue Jays 2

Ivan Nova pitched an impressive game in today’s 5-2 win over the Toronto Blue Jays.

Ivan Nova’s previous two starts were terrible but he returned to form in today’s game. On 7.1 innings, Nova allowed just 2 runs on 5 hits on the way to his 11th win of the season. He collected 10 strikeouts with 9 coming on his breaking ball and his last strikeout coming on a fastball. On Nova’s last batter, he gave up one of two run-scoring hits to Edwin Encarnacion. David  Robertson entered the game in relief with a runner on first and on the first pitch he induced a double play to end the inning instantly. Rafael Soriano had a perfect 9th inning to finish off the game and get the win and his 28th save of the season.

The back end of the Yankees lineup got to Blue Jays starter Aaron Laffey in the 4th inning. After a single and a walk, Jayson Nix came through with a single to bring in one. Then, Casey McGehee hit his first home run as a Yankee when he took a three-run home run into deep left center field to complete a 4-run 4th inning. Derek Jeter hit a ground-rule double deep to right center field for the 5th run of the game but this hit was a notable milestone. The hit was his 150th of the season and it made this his 17th consecutive season with 150 or more hits, tying him with Hank Aaron.
