Yankees game 113: Offense appears to snap the skid

New York Yankees 8 – Cleveland Indians 6

The Yankees bats finally emerged from a frigid hibernation.

During this losing streak, the Yankees table-setters were not getting on base and the big bats had no one to bring home. Tonight against Trevor Bauer, Jacoby Ellsbury led off the game with a single. Brett Gardner followed with a walk but hints of the recent past emerged. Alex Rodriguez popped out in the infield for the first out and Carlos Beltran popped out just outside of the infield for the second out, stranding the table-setters. But Brian McCann saved the Yankees from early heartbreak again when he came through with the three-run home run. The 20th home run of the season put the Yankees ahead by three.

For McCann, this is his eighth straight season with at least 20 home runs.

On the receiving end of the early offense, Nathan Eovaldi. Shocking, right? The Yankees right-handed starter walked two in the first inning but retired the side without allowing a run. Eovaldi has notably received a lot of run support this year and it kept going.

With one out in the second inning, Stephen Drew took Bauer deep for his 15th home run of the season. The solo home run extended the Yankees lead to four.

After a scoreless second inning, Nathan Eovaldi struggled in the third inning. Eovaldi started the third inning with a walk and that was followed with a single. After a sacrifice advanced them into scoring position, a sacrifice fly by Michael Brantley put the Indians on the board. Carlos Santana brought in a run on a single to bring the Indians within two but that was all they could get.

The Yankees were held off the scoreboard in the third inning but the bottom of the order got it started again.

In the fourth inning, Didi Gregorius started with a single. Stephen Drew followed with a double into the left field corner, scoring Gregorius. After the first out of the inning, Brett Gardner hit a double off the big wall in left field to score Drew. The Yankees extended their lead back to four.

In the sixth inning, an error opened the door for the Yankees to score again. After the first out against reliever Kyle Crockett, a throwing error by Giovanny Urshela got Stephen Drew on base for the third time tonight. A passed ball advanced him into scoring position and Jacoby Ellsbury got on base for the second time with a walk. Brett Gardner made use of the field with a single to center, scoring Drew for the third time and extending the lead to four.

Nathan Eovaldi had a rough start to the sixth inning when Yan Gomes and Abraham Almonte hit back-to-back doubles, plating a run in the inning. A ground out advanced Almonte to third and Lonnie Chisenhall brought him home with a single, the last batter Eovaldi faced. Adam Warren generated a double play in relief of Eovaldi to finish off his line.

In 5 1/3 innings, Nathan Eovaldi allowed four runs on seven hits while walking three and striking out four.

In the seventh inning, Justin Wilson came on and retired two but exited the game after two were on base. Dellin Betances walked the first batter he faced to load the bases and allowed a run to score when he threw a wild pitch. Betances bounced back with a strikeout to finish the inning.

In the eighth inning, Stephen Drew walked to reach base for the fourth time in four plate appearances. Jacoby Ellsbury followed with a single and Brett Gardner got his third hit of the game, driving in his third run of the game.

Stephen Drew scored for the fourth time in the night, a career-high for the Yankees second baseman.

After a scoreless eighth inning by Dellin Betances, Andrew Miller came on for the save. Miller surrendered a run in the inning but got the three outs for the save, snapping the Yankees five-game losing streak.

In his Yankees debut, Gregory Bird was hitless in five at-bats with three hard hit fly balls to center field and a pair of strikeouts.

Win – Nathan Eovaldi (12-2)

Loss – Trevor Bauer (9-9)

Save – Andrew Miller (25)
