Yankees Game 115: Starlin Castro shines in final Yankees game for Alex Rodriguez

After a rain delay, Alex Rodriguez started his final game as a Yankee against the visiting Tampa Bay Rays.

In the first inning, CC Sabathia led off with a walk but induced a double play. The double play loomed large when Evan Longoria took Sabathia deep for a solo home run to put the Rays ahead early.

After Brett Gardner was hit by a pitch, Alex Rodriguez came through in his first at-bat of his final Yankees game. On a line drive to right field against Chris Archer, Rodriguez reached second base with a run-scoring double that he was visibly pumped up about.

In the third inning, the Rays rallied with two outs in the third inning. With two on and two out, Evan Longoria found the hole in the infield defense with a run-scoring single to right. In the fourth inning, the Yankees responded. With two in scoring position and two out, Starlin Castro came up with a seeing-eye single to left, scoring two runs and putting the Yankees ahead, 3-2.

The Rays tied the game in the fifth inning when Logan Forsythe hit a sacrifice fly. In the sixth inning, Mark Teixeira reached first with a single and stole second base uncontested. After two outs were recorded, Starlin Castro hit a fly ball to left-center field that carried over the wall for a go-ahead two-run home run.

In six innings, CC Sabathia allowed three runs on four hits with three walks and seven strikeouts.

After a perfect inning by Tyler Clippard, the Yankees got another insurance run in the seventh inning when Aaron Hicks hit a line drive home run to left field against reliever Ryan Garton.

Adam Warren pitched a scoreless inning and the top of the ninth inning saw a familiar sight. In the ninth inning, Alex Rodriguez emerged from the dugout, manning third base. The last time Alex Rodriguez playedย third base wasย May 19, 2015. After the first out was recorded, Ronald Torreyes came in as the substitute for Rodriguez, allowing him to soak in hugs of embrace from his teammates as well as an outstanding reaction from the Yankee Stadium crowd, Alex Rodriguez departed into the dugout and the game continued. Dellin Betances proceeded to strikeout the side to wrap up tonight’s game.
