Cleveland Indians 3 — New York Yankees 0

The Yankees had opportunities but could not find the big hit today.

Rookie shortstop Jose Ramirez would put the Cleveland Indians on the board in the second inning. After getting two outs, third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall hit a single to center field and the Indians’ shortstop hit a two-run home run into the short porch for his first career home run.

With Indians starter Corey Kluber on the mound, one mistake may be the only one you can make.

Through the first three innings, Kluber did not allow a hit and only one batter, Francisco Cervelli, reached when he was hit by a pitch in the third inning. In the fourth inning, Jacoby Ellsbury got the Yankees first hit, a one-out double to left field. Chase Headley would walk with two outs but Kluber with the third most strikeouts in the American League, would strike out Stephen Drew to end the threat.

In the fifth inning, Ichiro Suzuki would reach base on an infield single but he would be stranded on second base after a strikeout and a ground out. In the sixth inning, the Yankees got a second major scoring threat and it was started by a historic hit.

Derek Jeter hit a soft infield single to third base that would put him in sole possession of sixth place on the all-time hits list with 3,431. Jacoby Ellsbury would follow with a single of his own to put two on with no outs but Carlos Beltran, Chase Headley and Stephen Drew would all go down on strikes by Kluber.

After the home run given up in the second inning, Brandon McCarthy kept the Indians off the scoreboard, giving the Yankees plenty of time to make the comeback. In 6.1 innings, Brandon McCarthy allowed two runs on seven hits while walking none and striking out eight. He would exit the game in the seventh inning with two on and one out. Lefty Rich Hill would load the bases with a single to former Yankee Chris Dickerson but would get a force out at home for the second out. Chase Whitley would finish the inning with a strikeout.

The Indians would get their third run of the game on a solo home run off the foul pole by Michael Brantley. The Yankees had an opportunity to get on the board in the eighth inning when Brett Gardner led off with a double against Bryan Shaw. Jacoby Ellsbury would reach base in the inning but the other batters in the inning all struck out.

The Yankees would also strikeout two more times in the ninth inning against closer Cody Allen to make it 15 on the day. Brandon McCarthy would be tagged with his first loss as a Yankee.
