Yankees game 116: Sun spoils sparkling start by Severino

New York Yankees 3 – Toronto Blue Jays 1

The Yankees looked to leave Toronto with the sweep behind the young arm of Luis Severino.

Jacoby Ellsbury led off with a single off of Drew Hutchison but two outs later, Ellsbury was caught stealing second to end the inning.

For Luis Severino, the young prospect looked to live up to the billing. After the first two batters, including a strikeout of Troy Tulowitzki on a 97 mph fastball, Severino was having a good start. He walked Jose Bautista and committed a balk that advanced the Blue Jays outfielder. As quick as the balk occurred, a pickoff was in effect at second base, picking off Bautista and ending the inning.

An unfortunate fact that has come with Luis Severino is the lack of run support. Following the leadoff single, the Yankees were held hitless until the sixth inning but more on that later.

After a scoreless second inning by Severino, he appeared to be working to a scoreless third inning but Carlos Beltran lost the fly ball in right field, likely due to the sun and it fell in for a two-out double by Troy Tulowitzki. With the inning extended, Josh Donaldson cashed in on a hanging slider for a run-scoring single. Severino hung a second slider in the inning and Jose Bautista made the rookie pay for it with a two-run home run to left center field, extending the Blue Jays lead to three.

Aside from the third inning, Luis Severino put together a great outing on the mound. In six innings, Luis Severino allowed three runs on five hits while walking three and striking out nine.

The only bad inning came in the third inning.

The Yankees second hit came in the sixth inning when Jacoby Ellsbury led off with a solo home run off the facing of the second deck. Ellsbury’s sixth home run of the season got the Yankees on the board.

Dueling bullpens backed up their pitchers, with Chasen Shreve and Adam Warren combining for two innings of scoreless baseball. Brett Cecil and Aaron Sanchez set up the Blue Jays winning opportunity. Roberto Osuna came on for the save and gave up a bloop single to Brett Gardner but got Alex Rodriguez to strike out and Mark Teixeira to ground out to end the game. The Blue Jays denied the sweep but they cannot deny that the Yankees are in first place at the end of the series.

Win – Drew Hutchison (12-2)

Loss – Luis Severino (0-2)
