Yankees Game 118: Bullpen Struggles in Defeat

Texas Rangers 10 — New York Yankees 6

The bullpen surrendered 6 runs in the 10-6 loss to the Texas Rangers.

Ivan Nova had two brief instances in which he struggled through his 5.2 innings. Nova gave up 2 runs early on a two-run single by Adrian Beltre. He ran into trouble in the 3rd inning when the bases were loaded with no outs on a Mike Olt double and two walks. Nova was able to get out the heart of the Rangers lineup with a strikeout of Josh Hamilton, a ground out at home and a huge strikeout to escape a tremendous jam. The Yankees right-hander didn’t get into trouble until his final inning when Josh Hamilton led off with a ground-rule double when leftfielder Andruw Jones lost the ball in the sun. Two runs came in before Nova’s day would end with a walk, loading the bases with two outs. Cody Eppley would be called upon to finish the inning and escaped with a ground out. Eppley would start the 7th inning with a single before Boone Logan was called upon and only managed to get one out of the three batters he faced. Joba Chamberlain would enter the game and went 1.1 innings but two of the inherited runners and would give up his two runs in the 8th inning. More mixing and matching would take place when Clay Rapada was also called upon but gave up one run in his 1.1 innings of work. In total, the Yankees bullpen struggled through 3.1 innings by giving up 6 runs on 9 hits.

Through 5 innings, Derek Holland allowed just 1 hit to Jayson Nix. The Yankees were trailing 4-0 when they came into the 6th inning. A leadoff infield single by Ichiro Suzuki got the Yankees offense started. Derek Jeter and Nick Swisher would bring in one run each to add their part in the rally. With 2 outs, Andruw Jones would make up for his defensive mishap in the top of the inning with a two-run home run to left field to tie the game at 4-4. The inning would extend further with a deep fly to right field that rookie Mike Olt could not catch as it deflected off his glove. Rookie reliever Tanner Scheppers would be called upon with the game tied and Russell Martin brought in the go-ahead single to put the Yankees ahead 5-4. With the bases loaded, the Yankees could only bring in one run on a double play that couldn’t be completed as Mark Teixeira hustled out of the box. This was all the offense that the Yankees could find as a walk and a double in the 8th inning would not result in any runs scoring.

Win – Tanner Scheppers (1-0)

Loss – Boone Logan (4-1)
