Yankees Game 120: Early Offense Enough For Sox

Boston Red Sox 4 — New York Yankees 1

David Phelps didn’t receive run support in his quality effort in today’s 4-1 loss to the Boston Red Sox.

David Phelps went a strong 6.2 innings in just his 5th big league start. He struck out 7 and went deep into his start on 95 pitches. In the 1st inning, Phelps gave up his the first runs of the game to the hot-hitting Adrian Gonzalez. The Red Sox first baseman went the opposite way for a two-run home run. These two runs were the only runs solely on the rookie right-hander. He would not give up the third and final run of his start until the 5th inning. A hit by Nick Punto into right field went for a run-scoring double but a misplay by Andruw Jones let Punto get to 3rd base. Phelps would escape this with two ground outs. A wild pitch by Cody Eppley in the 9th inning resulted in the 4th run of he game scoring. Clay Rapada and Derek Lowe combined with the infield by getting Jacoby Ellsbury to ground out to first, the next runner out at home, and Lowe finished with another ground out.

Only a pair of Yankees bats could muster any offense against Jon Lester and the Red Sox. Nick Swisher continued to swing a hot bat with 3 of the 7 hits of tonight’s game. The rest of the offense came from Curtis Granderson. The Yankees centerfielder got two hits, a double and a solo home run, for the only run for the Yankees today. The Yankees were 0 for 9 with runners in scoring position and could not figure out Jon Lester.
