Yankees Game 122: Bullpen Rocky in ChiTown

New York Yankees 6 — Chicago White Sox 9

Yankees scored early but the White Sox scored late in tonight’s 9-6 loss to the Chicago White Sox.

Freddy Garcia struggled in tonight’s game when he could not finish the 5th. In 4.1 innings of work, Garcia’s control was absent with 4 walks despite striking out 8. Garcia was hurt by former Yankee Dewayne Wise when he hit a two-run home run as a part of a big 5th inning. By the end of Garcia’s line, he had given up 5 runs but it wasn’t entirely his fault. Cody Eppley, Clay Rapada, and Joba Chamberlain would make an appearance in the 5-run 5th inning just to get 2 outs. Eppley gave up one run with one out. Rapada would not get an out before letting one of Garcia’s 5 runs too. Chamberlain would pitch into the next inning but gave up the final run of Garcia’s line. Joba Chamberlain would receive a lead in the 6th inning but quickly gave it up with a Gordan Beckham home run to lead off the inning. His last batter was former Red Sox third baseman, Kevin Youkilis, who he hit with a pitch. The bullpen woes would continue with Boone Logan giving up a two-run home run to Alexei Ramirez in the and Derek Lowe would give up a solo home run to Adam Dunn in the 8th inning to put a very poor effort by the bullpen. In just 3.2 innings, the Yankees bullpen required 5 pitchers that gave up a total of 4 runs.

Derek Jeter continues to silence critics with an outstanding four-hit game. He hit a double and his home run came in the 6th inning, a good response to the White Sox 5-run 5th inning to put the Yankees back ahead. Mark Teixeira returned to the lineup and paid off immediately with a run-scoring single to bring in Derek Jeter. Teixeira would bring in another run in the 3-run 5th inning. Casey McGehee came in on a pinch-hit opportunity came through to bring in the last run of that inning too. But the offense could not makeup for the pitching woes that the bullpen committed.
