Yankees game 122: Offense strikes early to support Severino

Cleveland Indians 2 – New York Yankees 6

On a day to honor one of the Core greats, the Yankees backed a part of their future.

Luis Severino took the mound after the great ceremony for Jorge Posada but the Indians quieted an honored crowd quickly. With one out, Francisco Lindor got a hold of a fastball and lined it into the seats in the short porch in right field for a solo home run.

Against Danny Salazar, the Yankees got a bloop base hit by Jacoby Ellsbury that went just beyond the reach of the Indians’ infield. With the bloop checked off, the Yankees got a blast in line drive fashion. Brett Gardner hit a laser into right field, a two-run home run in the first row of the short porch.

Salazar got the first out but Brian McCann got the long ball too, hitting a solo home run into the seats in right center field to extend the Yankees lead to two.

The bottom of the lineup got things started in the second inning. Stephen Drew and John Ryan Murphy hit a pair of singles to right field. Jacoby Ellsbury looked like he hit into a classic double play when the ground ball went back to the pitcher but Salazar hooked the ball to left center field on the throwing error that allowed Drew to score, extending the Yankees lead to three. Another run came on a sacrifice fly from Carlos Beltran and the Yankees had a four-run lead.

After getting the first out in the third inning, Severino ran into trouble when Jason Kipnis was walked and Francisco Lindor hit a single that put runners on the corners. On a ground ball to Greg Bird at first base, the throw went to Didi Gregorius at second base for the potential double play but the Yankees were forced to settle for one out at second. Inexplicably, Kipnis froze at third base, so a run did not score on the force out. With a second look, it was clear that Gregorius was not touching second base on the force out, igniting a debate between Indians manager Terry Francona and second base umpire Dan Iassogna but by rule the β€œneighborhood” play is not a reviewable play so a heated Francona was ejected for arguing the call. Carlos Santana struck out for the final out and Severino pumped a fist into his glove, clearly excited to escape the jam.

After two harmless innings, Severino faced trouble in the sixth inning.

Severino retired the first two outs before walking Lonnie Chisenhall and Abraham Almonte on full counts. Roberto Perez hit a sharp ground ball to Didi Gregorius that knocked the Yankees shortstop down but he maintained his composure to get the force out at second, finishing Severino’s day on a strong note.

In six innings, Luis Severino allowed one run on three hits while walking four and striking out six.

Adam Warren pitched a great seventh inning to carry on the game. Dellin Betances came in with the lead at four but Francisco Lindor led off the inning with a double. After a pair of ground outs, Lindor scored from third base on a single to left field by Chisenhall, bringing the lead down to three.

The Yankees added a run in the bottom of eighth inning after Didi Gregorius hit a double and Stephen Drew hit a single. John Ryan Murphy got the sacrifice fly that plated a run that put the Yankees back ahead by four.

Despite the save being out of reach, closer Andrew Miller came on for the ninth inning. He gave up a single but it was erased on a double play. After a fly out to center, the Yankees were able to notch a win on a day for one of their greats.

Congratulations to Luis Severino on his first major league win. First of many, Yankees fans hope.
