Yankees Game 124: Sale Solid in Sweep

New York Yankees 1 — Chicago White Sox 2

White Sox starter Chris Sale dominated the Yankees offense in tonight’s 2-1 loss to the Chicago White Sox.

Phil Hughes was a hard luck loser in tonight’s pitching duel. By comparing the lines of the pitchers, you wouldn’t think this was a duel but Hughes pitched through 7 innings and kept the Yankees in it. On 98 pitches, Phil Hughes allowed just 2 runs on 5 hits with 2 walks and 5 strikeouts. The first run Hughes gave up was a manufactured run. Following a double and a bunt single, Kevin Youkilis got the ball into the outfield for a sacrifice fly to put the White Sox ahead early. The issue Hughes dealt with was following up a run-scoring inning by the offense with a shut down inning to give the Yankees the momentum. Following a game-tying home run, Hughes gave up the lead again with an Alex Rios home run in the 6th inning. David Robertson followed up with a scoreless inning but when you are facing a Cy Young candidate, two runs is too much.

White Sox starter Chris Sale was outstanding. In 7.2 innings, Sale would allow just 1 run on 3 hits with 13 strikeouts. The White Sox left-hander was only hurt by one pitch, a 6th inning home run to Derek Jeter. This was the third consecutive game with a home run for the Yankees captain. The Yankees were hitless with runners in scoring position. Ichiro Suzuki struck out 3 times in tonight’s game. Five Yankees struck out 2 times. The only batter with multiple at-bats without striking out was Derek Jeter.

Win – Chris Sale (15-4)

Loss – Phil Hughes (12-11)
