Houston Astros 0 – New York Yankees 3

With the Yankees looking to avoid the sweep, Brandon McCarthy got the matinee season finale.

Through the first three innings, Brandon McCarthy left most of the outfield yawning as he generated five ground outs and three strikeouts while allowing one ball to reach the outfield. A good pitching effort always needs offense to back it up and in the second inning, the Yankees did just that.

Mark Teixeira led off the second inning with an opposite field single, defying the shift. Martin Prado would hit a hustle double as he blooped the base hit into left field but made it into second base to put two in scoring position for Chase Headley. The Yankees third baseman would hit a fly ball to right field that would fall in for two runs as Headley raced into second base with a two-run double. A smart baserunning decision would occur on the Francisco Cervelli ground out to third as Headley moved up to third after Matt Dominguez made the throw to third. This would be a crucial 90 feet as Ichiro Suzuki hit a fly ball deep enough for a sacrifice fly and it scored the Yankees third run of the game.

McCarthy would give up his first hit in the fourth inning and found himself with two runners in scoring position after a Dexter Fowler double to right but a ground out back to the pitcher ended the threat. The only other threat against McCarthy came in the seventh inning when Chris Carter led off with a single and one out later, Marc Krauss hit a ground-rule double to right field. With two runners in scoring position, Brandon McCarthy would strikeout Jon Singleton and got a fly out from Carlos Corporan. Including these two outs, McCarthy retired the last eight batters he faced and completed the Yankees win.

In a complete game, Brandon McCarthy allowed no runs on four hits while striking out eight on 107 pitches.

In just two hours and seven minutes, the Yankees played one of the fastest games played in the current Yankee Stadium.
