Yankees game 125: Nearly shutout in blowout loss

Houston Astros 15 – New York Yankees 0

The Yankees saw the game get out of hand quickly in tonight’s game with the Houston Astros.

Ivan Nova took the mound tonight and by the end of his start, he will desperately want a redo. After retiring the first two batters, Carlos Correa was walked. On a fly ball to center field, Jacoby Ellsbury backed up before trying to make up ground coming back in and missing a sliding catch that allowed Colby Rasmus to reach third on a run-scoring triple. After a walk of Evan Gattis, Carlos Gomez hit a double to left field that scored Rasmus. Luis Valbuena hit a double of his own, scoring two runs. Marwin Gonzalez hit a single to right field that scored another run. A walk to Jason Castro, the nine hitter, allowed the lineup to turn over before the inning was finally over with the Yankees trailing by five before the Yankees could step to the plate.

The Yankees managed a hit off of Dallas Keuchel in the first inning but that was it.

The game got bumpy from the first inning for Nova but it blew up in the fifth inning. Ivan Nova surrendered a double to Colby Rasmus to start off the fifth inning. Evan Gattis dealt the final blow to Nova’s night when he took him deep to left field for a two-run home run.

In four innings, Ivan Nova allowed seven runs on seven hits while walking four and striking out one.

Nick Rumbelow came on in relief. After getting two outs in the fifth inning, Marwin Gonzalez took him deep on a home run to right field. Jason Castro followed with a double to right field. After a single by Jose Altuve hit a single to put runners on the corners, Jed Lowrie hit a ground ball to second baseman Brendan Ryan but he whiffed on the ball, with the error allowing a run to score.

Following the inning of work by Rumbelow, Chris Capuano took the mound. After a scoreless inning, the wheels fell off the Capuano ride. With one out in the seventh inning, Jason Castro hit a single. Pinch-hitter Jake Marisnick walked and with two outs, Carlos Correa walked to load the bases. Colby Rasmus brought in a run on a bases loaded walk. Evan Gattis plated two runs on a single and Carlos Gomez hit a deep home run just to the right of center field for three runs, putting the Astros lead at 15.

In two innings of relief, Chris Capuano allowed six runs on three hits while walking four and striking out one.

The Yankees were held scoreless in eight innings against Dallas Keuchel. The Yankees prevented a shutout in the ninth inning by scoring a run but the highlight for the Yankees came on the mound in the last two innings of the game.

With the game well out of hand, the second baseman turned right fielder took one more turn, as a pitcher. Brendan Ryan took the mound and gave up a pair of singles in the eighth inning but stranded the runners on the bases. He returned to the mound in the ninth inning and had a perfect ninth inning of stellar relief work.

In two innings of relief, Brendan Ryan allowed two hits but no runs in the best showing by a pitcher tonight. (Reminder: He’s NOT a position player)
