Yankees game 126: No offense in series finale

Houston Astros 6 – New York Yankees 2

The Yankees offense showed little life in today’s series finale with the Houston Astros.

After a scoreless inning by the returning Michael Pineda, Evan Gattis put the first run on the board with a solo home run to right field. The Yankees threatened against Collin McHugh with three hits in the first two innings but were not able to bring a runner around to score. Pineda kept the Yankees in the game until the fifth inning. Carlos Gomez led off the fifth inning with a single. Gomez advanced to third on a single by Luis Valbuena and scored when Jake Marisnick dropped a bunt down for a single. Jason Castro walked to load the bases and a sacrifice fly by Jose Altuve put the Astros ahead by three. Chasen Shreve came on in relief but gave up a single to Marwin Gonzalez that gave the Astros a four-run lead. After a walk loaded the bases again, Shreve threw a wild pitch that brought home another run. Shreve finished the inning but, with the struggling offense, the game was out of reach.

In 4 1/3 innings, Michael Pineda allowed five runs on six hits while walking one and striking out three.

From the sixth inning to the eighth inning, the Yankees led off with a walk but only one inning resulted in runs. In the seventh inning, Greg Bird walked against McHugh and Didi Gregorius brought them both home with a two-run home run to the second deck in right field.

Despite the two runs on the board, Evan Gattis muscled up on a second home run today, this one off of Adam Warren and going deep into the left field bleachers.

The Astros took two out of three in the series with the Yankees as the offense continues to struggle as a whole.

Win – Collin McHugh (14-7)
