Yankees Game 129: Offense dormant behind another good start by CC

Baltimore Orioles 5 – New York Yankees 0

After scoring 27 runs over the last two games, the New York Yankees looked to keep the offense alive and get a sweep of the Baltimore Orioles.

All was fairly quiet through the first five innings.  Manny Machado and Aaron hicks each singled in the first, Steve Pearce would single and Ronald Torreyes would double in the third.

The Yankees hoped to get something going in the bottom of the fourth as Gary Sanchez, following a single of his own, tried taking third on a single to right by Mark Teixeira, but Pearce made a nice throw into Machado at third for the out.  Didi Gregorius would also single, but the Yankees could not capitalize on the hits.  Torreyes would single in the fifth inning as well.

Pearce would break the 0-0 tie when he led off the sixth inning with a solo shot to left field.  In the top of the seventh inning, after two singles by Jonathan Schoop and Nolan Reimold, Yankees manager Joe Girardi would call it for today’s starter CC Sabathia.  Adam Warren would come in to finish the inning, but not before Pearce singled to drive in another two runs, giving the Orioles a 3-0 lead.

In 6.2 innings of work this afternoon, Sabathia allowed three runs on six hits with two walks and eight strikeouts.  Today was another great outing for Sabathia who walked off the field to a warm ovation but again, unfortunately, no offense to back him up.

Following a single by Machado in the top of the eighth inning, Mark Trumbo would add two runs insurance by way of the long ball to left center field, extending the Orioles lead to 5-0.

Other than a single by Brian McCann in the seventh and a double by Sanchez in the eighth, the Yankees couldn’t get anything going.  Despite it not being a save situation, Orioles closer Zach Britton came on to pitch the bottom of the ninth, putting the Yankees down one, two, three.

Win – Kevin Gausman (6-10)

Loss – CC Sabathia (8-11)
