Yankees game 130: Ellsbury is the offense in loss

New York Yankees 2 — Detroit Tigers 5

Most of the Yankees offense was absent in a series opener in Detroit.

After an hour rain delay, the Yankees and Tigers would begin their game. After a scoreless first inning, Brandon McCarthy would have a problem finding the strike zone in the second. J.D. Martinez hit a single and Nick Castellanos walked to start the inning. McCarthy would get the first out of the inning but Eugenio Suarez would be hit by a pitch and Rajai Davis would walk on a full count with the bases loaded to plate the first run of the game. He would minimize the damage by inducing a double play but Rick Porcello had his A game going tonight.

Through the first three innings, Rick Porcello retired eight of the nine outs on the ground. A pair of hits in the third inning would put the Tigers ahead by two but the Yankees would receive offense from one man tonight.

The man is Jacoby Ellsbury and with two outs in the fifth inning, the Yankees center fielder would hit a solo home run deep into right center field to put the Yankees within one. McCarthy would get a pair of perfect innings but the sixth inning would not go well. Victor Martinez and J.D. Martinez would reach on a single and double before Castellanos hit a single that put the Tigers back ahead by two. The Tigers would score one more on a double play. McCarthy would give up one more run in the seventh inning of his worst start since joining the Yankees,

In 6.1 innings, Brandon McCarthy allowed five runs on nine hits while walking two and striking out five.

The one-man offense continued with Jacoby Ellsbury hitting his second home run of the night. The 13th home run of the season came in the eighth inning. The Yankees had a few opportunities to score but could not get the hit needed to keep their five-game winning streak going.
