Yankees Game 130: Errors and Ineffective in Loss

Toronto Blue Jays 8 — New York Yankees 5

Defensive errors and offensive struggles play a big role in today’s 8-5 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays.

CC Sabathia pitched today and while he didn’t have his best game on the mound, the defense also slipped up behind the Yankees ace. Through 7 innings, Sabathia gave up 5 runs total but only 2 were earned. He didn’t walk a batter as he struck out 8 but the numbers don’t show the leads he received. After receiving an early 2-0 lead in the 1st inning, Sabathia would give up 3 runs in the 3rd inning. An error by third baseman Jayson Nix put another run on in the 3rd that would eventually become a bases-loaded situation with no outs. An unusual but effective double play turned by Jayson Nix and catcher Chris Stewart that kept the run from scoring. However, 3 consecutive hits with 2 outs brought in the 3 runs of this 3rd inning that seemed to be turning out well. The offense would respond with 2 runs to put Sabathia ahead but in the 6th inning, Yunel Escobar got his biggest hit of his 4-hit game with a 2-run home run, after he failed to put down a sacrifice bunt, to put the Blue Jays back ahead as Sabathia lost another lead. Derek Lowe would take over in the 8th inning but would not record an out after he was removed following a double and a single. Two pitchers would be called on to get through the 8th inning, Boone Logan and Cody Eppley. Logan would strikeout his only batter but Cody Eppley would fall victim to a suicide squeeze play by catcher Jeff Mathis bringing in one run before the inning would end. Eppley and Clay Rapada would load the bases, including an error by Eric Chavez, before Joba Chamberlain was called upon in the 9th inning. On a 2-2 count, Chamberlain’s fastball would be hit by Escobar for his 3rd double of the game to right field when Jones couldn’t keep the ball in his glove on a dive for 2 runs.

The Yankees offense couldn’t come through with great opportunities as they hit 3 for 17 with runners in scoring position. The Yankees frequently start games with a series of baserunners and today was like that. Derek Jeter singled and Nick Swisher walked before Andruw Jones and Curtis Granderson would bring them in. In the 3rd inning, with 2 on and 2 out, Curtis Granderson would come through with a 2-run double, what would be rare success with runners in scoring position. The Yankees had a tremendous run-scoring opportunity in the 4th inning when Jayson Nix led off with a walk; which Ichiro Suzuki followed with a double to put runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs. After Stewart pops out, Derek Jeter would be intentionally walked before Nick Swisher and Robinson Cano would strikeout swinging, failing to score. In the 6th inning, Jayson Nix led off with a double but again, failed to score. The Yankees got a lead off double in the 7th and again failed to score too. The Yankees would score 1 run in the 8th inning on back-to-back doubles but would not make a bigger inning of another good opportunity. Overall, the Yankees hit 3 for 17 with runners in scoring position, horrendous numbers for an offense to put up.
