Yankees game 131: Pitcher’s duel goes the Yankees way

New York Yankees 3 – Boston Red Sox 1

The Yankees win a close pitcher’s duel with the Red Sox.

Through the first two innings, Michael Pineda and Rick Porcello kept it scoreless, though Porcello looked untouchable with five strikeouts in the first six outs.

In the third inning, Jackie Bradley Jr. hit a double off the monster in center field before scoring with two outs when Pablo Sandoval hit a run-scoring single.

For Rick Porcello, he reached his season-high seven strikeouts after four innings.

In the fifth inning, Alex Rodriguez led off with a broken bat single to left field. Chase Headley and Gregory Bird struck out to continue adding to Porcello’s total but an error extended the inning. Didi Gregorius hit a ground ball down the first base line that first baseman Travis Shaw whiffed on, allowing Gregorius to reach and Rodriguez to reach third base.

The extra out proved valuable for the Yankees when Stephen Drew went the other way for a two-run double, giving the Yankees the 2-1 lead.

Michael Pineda responded with a shut down fifth inning, striking out three despite Bradley Jr. hitting a second double.

In six innings, Michael Pineda allowed one run on four hits with no walks and seven strikeouts. A solid outing to go head-to-head with Rick Porcello.

Justin Wilson came on for the seventh inning and got the first two outs before Brock Holt hit a single to left. Dellin Betances came in to get the last out but Blake Swihart hit a single to put two on with two outs. Betances shut down the inning by striking out Jackie Bradley Jr. to keep the lead at one.

The Yankees got insurance in the eighth inning with Porcello on the mound.

After striking out the first two batters, for a career-high 13 strikeouts, Brett Gardner got redemption after striking out twice when he hit a home run just inside the right field foul pole to extend the lead to two.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, Dellin Betances sandwiched a pair of singles around the first out. On a pitch to David Ortiz, Mookie Betts and Xander Bogaerts went for a double steal. Betts, the lead runner was thrown out at third base when he over slid third just enough to be called out.

David Ortiz followed with his fourth strikeout to end the inning.

Andrew Miller got the call in the ninth inning and allowed a base runner on a hit batter but struck out three to end the close game in the Yankees favor.
