Yankees game 131: Third inning hit parade fuels the win

New York Yankees 8 — Detroit Tigers 4

An unbelievable third inning was enough for a Yankees win.

Despite getting a pair of hits in the first inning against David Price, the former Rays pitcher now Tigers pitcher would strike out three to keep the Yankees off the scoreboard. It would take the lefty 28 pitches though. Shane Greene would walk the first batter in his inning but he would retire the next nine and it would receive an outstanding inning of run support from the Yankees lineup.

After being kept off the scoreboard despite four baserunners in the first two innings, the lineup would turn over and Jacoby Ellsbury started the inning with a single. He would be picked off of first but Miguel Cabrera would make a throw wide of second and Ellsbury reached second base for his second stolen base of the night. Derek Jeter would plate the first run of the night with a double to the right field corner. Martin Prado would follow with a single to put runners on the corners. Mark Teixeira would hit a double of his own to bring home Jeter from third. Carlos Beltran and Brian McCann would hit a pair of run-scoring singles to make it a four-run inning. Chase Headley would hit a single to load the bases. Brett Gardner and Francisco Cervelli would hit a pair of singles to knock in two more runs and score two more runs. Jacoby Ellsbury and Derek Jeter would hit a pair of productive outs to score two more runs before the inning ended.

In case you did not keep track of the names, batters 1 through 9 just got a hit, all of them before the first out of the inning was recorded. This would knock David Price out of the game. In two plus innings, David Price allowed eight runs on 12 hits while walking one and striking out three.

With a substantial eight run lead, Shane Greene just needed to record outs. He would give up a pair of hits, including a double to Miguel Cabrera,  in the fourth inning that plated the first Tigers run but the lead was intact. Another run would score on a Victor Martinez home run in the fifth inning but Shane Greene would exit the game with a good lead. In seven innings, Shane Greene allowed two runs on five hits while walking one and striking out eight.

Adam Warren and Dellin Betances would pitch the eighth and ninth inning, giving up a run each, but it would not be enough to get rid of the eight-run third inning. The Yankees would reach base on a pair of hits and a pair of walks since the big inning but the one inning of absolute offense would be enough.

As a team, the Yankees were 8-for-14 with runners in scoring position. All of the hits came in the third inning.

Win – Shane Greene (4-1)

Loss – David Price (12-10)
