Yankees Game 134: CC Sabathia pitches great but offense cannot be found

New York Yankees 0 – Baltimore Orioles 2

CC Sabathia toed the rubber in tonight’s start in Baltimore.

The Yankees could not solve Kevin Gausman through the first three innings and the fourth inning saw their best scoring opportunity.

In the fourth inning, the Yankees loaded the bases with one out but a strikeout of Starlin Castro and a fly out by Brian McCann ended the inning without a run coming across the plate. In the bottom half of the inning, Mark Trumbo led off with a double. After striking out Jonathan Schoop, CC Sabathia surrendered a single to right by Chris Davis. On the base hit, Aaron Judge could not come up with the ball smoothly. On the error by Judge, Trumbo managed to score the unearned run that put the Orioles ahead. In the fifth inning, Adam Jones got CC Sabathia with a solo home run that made it a two-run Yankees deficit.

In six strong innings, CC Sabathia allowed two runs, one earned, on six hits with two walks and one strikeout.

Any other day with any average offense, Sabathia adds a win to his record.

In the seventh inning, Adam Warren came on and gave up a lead off double to J.J. Hardy. After an infield single by Michael Bourn put runners on the corners, Caleb Joseph grounded back to the pitcher, who caught Hardy off third base to eliminate the lead runner. After a strikeout of Adam Jones, Steve Pearce was walked by Warren. With the bases loaded, Adam Warren managed to strikeout Manny Machado to keep the deficit at just two. Tyler Clippard added a scoreless inning of work but the anemic offense continued coming up empty.

After six scoreless innings by Gausman, Mychal Givens, Brad Brach and closer Zach Britton finished off the game as the Yankees were held to just four hits in tonight’s loss.
