Yankees game 134: One mistake costs Pineda in one-hit shutout

New York Yankees 0 — Toronto Blue Jays 2

The Yankees offense cannot back up the great start by Michael Pineda.

Often in a Yankees game these days, one inning is their offense. Today, Michael Pineda made an early first inning mistake and it would be the only one he could make. After giving up a single to leadoff the game by Jose Reyes, Pineda would get the next two outs but a hanging slider on an 0-2 count to Jose Bautista would not stay in the ballpark. The two-run home run was a line drive much like his home run yesterday and it gave the Blue Jays an early lead.

On the opposing side, Drew Hutchison took the mound and cruised through the first three innings and had not allowed a hit. In the fourth inning, he would get the first two outs on strikeouts but Carlos Beltran would take a glancing blow from an inside pitch and Beltran reaches base by being hit. Mark Teixeira would follow with a double into the gap to put runners on second and third with two outs. Brian McCann, like Beltran, would wear a pitch, after being hit in the back with a pitch that loaded the bases still with two outs. Martin Prado would be unable to come through in the situation as he would fly out to center field and end the inning. Little did the Yankees know or expect that the Teixeira double would be the only hit for them in the game.

Nine of the next 11 Yankees batters would be out as Hutchison pitched a gem. In seven innings, Drew Hutchison allowed one hit and walked two while striking out nine.

after the home run in the first inning, Michael Pineda would not allow another run. In the seventh inning, the first two batters reached on a single and a double that knocked the big righty out of the game. In six plus innings, Michael Pineda allowed two runs on seven hits while walking none and striking out three. On any other day , this would be a good line for the starter.

Pineda exited with two on in scoring position with no outs and Shawn Kelley came in, looking to bounce back from heartbreak in Detroit. His bounce back would go great as he got the next three batters out without allowing a run to score. Aaron Sanchez replaced Hutchison and got the next six Yankees out to complete the one-hitter for the Toronto Blue Jays.

As a team, the Yankees struck out 11 times. Besides the fourth inning, the Yankees never had more than one runner on base.
