Yankees game 135: Long ball gets McCarthy in finale

New York Yankees 3 — Toronto Blue Jays 4

The Blue Jays crush the ball to get back and eventually win today’s game.

In yesterday’s game, the Yankees could not muster more than one hit and could not score at all. With one swing, Brett Gardner matched the hit total and put the Yankees on the board. A leadoff home run by Gardner off of J.A. Happ put the Yankees ahead by one. Derek Jeter would put the Yankees hit total ahead of yesterday’s with a single. Two batters into the game and the Yankees already improved from yesterday. A double play erased the single and the Yankees managed just one run.

Early in today’s game, Brandon McCarthy had the sinker working. Five of McCarthy’s first nine outs came on the ground.

The Yankees got a two out triple by Francisco Cervelli in the second inning but could not bring him home. In the fourth inning, Martin Prado led off with a single. Two outs later, Chase Headley would hit a single that put runners on the corners. Francisco Cervelli would come up with his second hit of the day, a single that would give the Yankees a two-run lead. In the fifth inning, Brett Gardner would create his own offense again but this one did not leave the ballpark. Brett Gardner would hit a fly ball to deep left center and he made the dash for third base. He would slide in for the triple and a relay by shortstop Jose Reyes to try and gun down Gardner would become a throwing error when the ball went into the dugout, awarding Gardner with home plate.

Brandon McCarthy was rolling along, generating three ground outs in the fourth and striking out the side in the fifth but the sixth inning would look much different.

After a pair of ground outs, Melky Cabrera and Jose Bautista would go back-to-back with solo home runs to bring the Blue Jays within one. He would finish the inning but he would also return for the seventh inning. Edwin Encarnacion led off the inning and he tied it up with a home run to deep left field. A walk of Dioner Navarro would be the end of McCarthy’s day on the mound. Dellin Betances would come in with a runner on first. The big right-hander would strike out Colby Rasmus and Danny Valencia for the first two outs of the inning. Pinch-runner Steve Tolleson would make a huge steal of second base, putting him in scoring position. Munenori Kawasaki would hit a single to right field where Carlos Beltran made a great throw to Cervelli but Tolleson slid under the diving tag and the Blue Jays scored four unanswered runs in two innings.

After getting two on and failing to score in the eighth inning, the Yankees had another opportunity in the ninth inning against closer Casey Janssen. With one out, Jacoby Ellsbury, nursing a bad ankle, would come off the bench and hit a bloop double out of the reach of the infielders and outfielders in shallow right field that let him get into second base for a one-out double. Brett Gardner would come up to the plate needing a single for the cycle after hustling for a double in the seventh inning but he would fall short, grounding out to first base. Derek Jeter would be unable to come through with a runner on third as he popped out to second base and the Yankees lost another.
