Yankees Game 135: Super Nova shines bright in shutout

Ivan “Super” Nova was outstanding in today’s 2-0 shutout win over the Baltimore Orioles.

Ivan Nova got into early trouble when he hit Adam Jones with a pitch and Matt Wieters hit a bloop single in front of Ichiro Suzuki. Nova would induce a double play and got a fly out to escape the jam.

Brett Gardner got the offense started with a double down the first base line. He would advance to third on Jeter’s out and Robinson Cano brought home Gardner with a double of his own.

Ivan Nova and Scott Feldman maintained the one-run game. Ivan Nova was dealing today. He would hit two Orioles batters but only allowed two hits through his first seven innings. In the eighth inning, Nova gave up a leadoff walk to J.J. Hardy but just as he pictured it, Nova induced a double play. The last batter of the inning would ground out back to Ivan Nova and he was visibly pumped up to go eight strong.

After seven innings of one-run baseball, Scott Feldman was replaced by left-hander Troy Pattton. The lefty had one job, Robinson Cano. The Yankees second baseman would bring in the insurance run for Nova with a deep home run to right field. His 25th home run of the season put the Yankees ahead by two and gave Ivan Nova some room for error as he returned to the mound for the ninth inning.

Ivan Nova came on for the ninth inning looking for the complete game shutout. The first batter, Nate McLouth would reach first for a single after the ground ball to Nova was retrieved and thrown a little wide of first base and pulled Overbay off of first. Manny Machado would weakly fly out to left field for the first out. Major league home run leader Chris Davis would hit a deep fly ball to the short porch but there was just enough room to make the catch. Adam Jones would hit a line drive to left field but it was right at the captain, Derek Jeter, to end the game.

Lyle Overbay entered today’s game with an 0-for-16 skid and snapped it with a 2-for-3 day.

Ivan Nova went the complete game, allowing just three hits while walking one and striking out five. He used 104 pitches.

The Yankees are now four back of the second Wild Card spot. They are 7.5 back in the American League East after a huge win with a tremendous start by Ivan Nova.
