Yankees game 136: Too much to make up for in loss

Boston Red Sox 9 — New York Yankees 4

An awful start for the Yankees was too much to overcome in defeat.

Shane Greene looked to start the series strong against the Boston Red Sox but he could not get it going right from the beginning. After getting the first out, Mookie Betts hit a single and David Ortiz walked on four straight pitches. The power hitting Yoenis Cespedes would plate the first run for the Red Sox on a double to left field. Mike Napoli would hit the productive out on a sacrifice fly and the Yankees were ahead by two.

After a scoreless second inning by Greene, the Red Sox would get going once more in the third inning. After getting one out, Cespedes would hit a single to left. Mike Napoli would walk and Daniel Nava would bring them all home on a three-run home run. Xander Bogaerts would hit a home run of his own and just like that the Yankees were looking at a six-run deficit to overcome. A walk of David Ross would be the end for Shane Greene.

In just 2.2 innings, Shane Greene allowed six runs on six hits while walking three and striking out three.

After two hitless innings, Martin Prado stepped to the plate and said forget the no hits and forget the shutout. With one swing, Martin Prado put the Yankees on the board. His 12th home run led of the season led off the inning. After Esmil Rogers finished off the third inning, he would start the fourth but gave back the run when Mookie Betts hit a solo home run.

In the fifth inning, Esmil Rogers and Rich Hill combined to keep the Red Sox off the board while the Yankees attempted to rally.

Carlos Beltran started the fifth inning with a single to center field. With the infield shifted to the right side identifying the propensity to pull, Brian McCann bunted it to the left side where no one defended, putting two on with no one out. Martin Prado would hit a single to deep left field but he ran with his head down behind Beltran and McCann who had advanced just one base. The mental lapse on the bases made a potential bases loaded situation a one with two in scoring position and one out instead. Chase Headley would walk to load the bases and Francisco Cervelli would do the same and bringing home a run in the process. After Ellsbury lined out for the second out, Derek Jeter would hit a ground ball that would initially be ruled an out. A review would overturn the call and Jeter’s infield single brought home the third run of the inning. Brett Gardner would be called out on a poor strike three and he let home plate umpire Tim Timmons know he disagreed with the incorrect call.

With a slam of the helmet and a slam of the bat, Brett Gardner was ejected as he voiced his displeasure with the call.

Attempts at a rally in the sixth and seventh inning were squashed with double plays. Recently acquired reliever Chaz Roe was on for the ninth inning and gave up a pair of runs that would be insignificant despite a ninth inning home run by Brian McCann.

Besides the two-run ninth inning by Roe, Esmil Rogers, Rich Hiill, Adam Warren and David Huff combined for 5.1 innings and the only run was on the home run by Betts. Most impressive was Warren pitching two perfect innings with three strikeouts and David Huff pitching a perfect inning at the top of the order with one strikeout. In the ninth inning, former Met outfielder Chris Young pinch hit for Martin Prado and it would revealed that the versatile Prado felt something in his hamstring so he will likely be day-to-day as the Yankees hope this is not a serious injury to one of the better bats on the roster.

Win – Joe Kelly (3-3)
